'The most important shot in golf is the next one'
That's a quote form the late Ben Hogan and is one I firmly believe in.

It also applies to the young players coming into the club. The most important member of the club could be the next one. Who would like to be able to brag that you helped one of our Juniors become the next Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus? Well now's your chance to help make that a reality. As you know Pumpherston Golf Club has been struggling for Junior Members in recent years and the committee has been short handed so hasn't been able to give the Juniors the focus they deserve. This is changing this year and we need your help to rebuild the Junior Section.

If you have children, grand children or friends with children who are interested in golf we would like you to encourage them to come along to Pumpherston, its one of the best courses in West Lothian.

We are only just starting on the journey to rebuild the Junior Section but you will have already seen the first change on the course, with the Junior Tees prominently marked again.

There is more to come throughout the year and we have the support of the Club Captain, Full Committee and our new Club professional Michael Brooks.

We are already looking at:

  • Restarting the Pathways Program in May for the Younger Members
  • Creating a Junior Bunker where there will be a voluntary £1 penalty for going into it, so we can build up a Juniors Development Fund
  • There will be a Charity Tin placed on the bar to encourage donations to the Juniors Development Fund
  • We are going to hold a Family Open Day on the 2nd of July to coincide with the Pumpherston Junior Open.
Michael is already planning:

  • Getting out into the schools as soon as he is fully staffed
  • Holding summer coaching camps
  • Running a Junior Order of Merit (numbers entering competitions permitting)
If you have any other ideas for helping rebuild the Juniors Section please get in touch. There is no such thing as a bad idea and everything will be given consideration.

We already have a small number of volunteers , but if you think that you can spare some time to help please let us know.

Life is good when you are golfing.

Ian Cuthbert,  Junior Convenor

Our Junior section has been hugely successful in recent times and the club takes great pride in its crop of talented young players.

Pumpherston has traditionally been blessed with a strong junior membership and over the years has carried out a great deal or work to welcome more boys and girls into the club. In recognition of these efforts, the club was awarded the Scottish Golf Unions Junior Charter - an accolade given to the most "junior friendly" golf clubs in Scotland.

The design of the course incorporated the needs of junior members from the onset, creating a junior lounge within the clubhouse and developing a junior practice area complete with pitching and bunker facilities and a putting green.

This junior-friendly philosophy has continued, the emphasis at Pumpherston Golf Club is based on games of learning , with particular emphasis on having fun. It is all about skill acquisition through being set challenges, rather than merely being taught what to do.

Juniors are separated into three sections - beginner, intermediate and advances - based on ability rather than age or sex, meaning that they learn alongside players with similar level of skill and there are no boundaries put in the way of the most talented.

Competitions are run throughout the year, there is regular individual and group coaching enabling all levels to progress and learn the building blocks of sound technique, understanding of the rules and appreciation of others through course etiquette that is required for a lifetime of good golf.

The group has its own junior convener and additional member support from across all sections. Success breeds success and the club is confident that since creating a development pathway, the future looks good for our up-and-coming golfers, who are the lifeblood of our sport.
